So why Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks?

The answer comes from Stevie Nicks herself, "If Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers had said 'Leave Fleetwood Mac and come and join us,' I probably would have." Stevie Nicks approached Tom Petty in 1976 and asked him to write a song for her. That event led to a nearly 40-year friendship and an on-and-off collaboration. That led us to connect-the-dots and create Petty Rumours.
