The Second Hands is a folk duo comprised of songwriters Geoff Schroeder and Laura Hoch. The two met playing music in the beginning of 2009 and began writing together soon after. They recorded a collection of songs both old and new for their 2011 self-titled debut album. The songs were recorded over a three day period with engineer Pete Kennedy (The Kennedy’s) at Narrow Lane studios in Bridgeham...
pton, NY.
The Second Hands’ songwriting is both personal and poetic, reflecting intimate experiences that can be universally interpreted by the listener. Their warm vocal blends and folk melodies sit well over simplistic, thought-out guitar arrangements. Mandolin and electric guitar serve as subtle accompaniment through much of the album.
Mrs. Hoch’s vocal presence is strong, pure and authentic. Her voice is really the “starlet” of the album, while Mr. Schroeder displays a rich style of finger picking and a loose, Dylan-esque style of singing. While many of the songs are about love and relationships, they do not borrow any of the clichés from love songs. Their lyrical attack is both original and colorful, painting personal experiences that reflect basic human emotion.
Both have experience playing in the U.S. and abroad. Mrs. Hoch studied music at Purchase College in White Plains, NY. She was a pioneer in the anti-folk scene in New York in the early 2000’s and also toured the U.S. and Europe with the band Herman Dune. Mr. Schroeder lived and played in Nashville for two years and traveled much of the south listening, learning and playing folk/traditional music. Their musical collaboration and debut album is unique, soulful and sure to gain them recognition in the not too distant future.   At 8 PM
